Big holiday sale at Zazzle.com - one day only EDIT-SALE NOW OVER :(

I just thought I'd mention, today is the culmination of Zazzle's 12 deals of Christmas sale. As we're getting near most people's online-shipping-by-christmas deadline, they have a single coupon-code that gives you ALL twelve of their deals, just until midnight (PT) tonight (ENDS MIDNIGHT OF DEC 14/2009).

EDIT-SALE NOW OVER :(

Entering 12DEALZAZZLE at your shopping cart gives you:
* 50% off 10+ Cards
* Buy 1 Mug, Get 1 Free
* 30% off Stocking Stuffers
* 5 Bucks off Tees
* 60% off Posters
* 30% off Bags
* 30% off select Brands
* $9 off Calendars
* $10 off Ties
* $11 off Skateboards
* Buy 1 Binder, Get 1 Free
* 30% off hats and embroidered hats

Some of those are pretty good deals. Obviously, I'm mentioning this because Zazzle is the main place where my GF and I design and sell merchandise (actually, it's what she does for a living). I'll stop spamming you now.

My GF's main Zazzle store
My Zazzle Store

Some random stuff...

I've been playing a lot of www.leagueoflegends.com ever since the most recent time quill18 linked it. If you ever played the fan-created custom WarcraftIII game called Defense Of The Ancients (DOTA) or the many variants, you'll pick it up in seconds. It's the next evolution of the same thing, created by the same people but with their own custom game engine (instead of playing through Battle.net).

If you've never played them, it should still be easy enough to pick up. Basically, the map has two equally matched sets of defenses, and both sides spawn a never-ending stream of npc troops who collide in the middle of the map and slowly kill each other. Then you (five players on each side) come in, each controlling a different hero with all kinds of crazy abilities, and you gain experience and money (to buy from a wide assortment of upgradable gear) and trying to kill the enemy heroes until one side or the other breaks through the other side's defenses.

They have it set up with a couple measures to reduce "leavers" (people who quit too early or just because they didn't get the hero they prefer) which plagued it in Warcraft III, and they give you out-of-game experience level up your account and gain advantages in combat, plus points to unlock new characters. You can pay to get points much faster if you want, but it's totally optional. An awesome free game.

Now, I don't want to suggest that these apply to League of Legends, but it does bring to mind some common advertising phrases that don't mean quite what the advertisers THINK they mean:

Anyone can play! TRANSLATION:

Stupid people can play

Little of no strategy
Free to play!/Always Free!/Free Forever! TRANSLATION:

Mindboggling grind

Pay "options" make you feel inadequate. Or, you know... pay.
Minutes to Learn; a Lifetime to Master! TRANSLATION:

Appaling degree of randomness

You'll start to like it, then get stomped again and again by pros
Actually, if anything, I think LoL (yes, nice acronym, huh?) suffers from being TOO friendly to free play, in that I personally don't see why anyone would pay real money to buy Riot Points (or whatever they call them). They may add more stuff later though - either way, good for me (the guy who refuses to pay anything for "free" games).

Lastly, I want to dig this out of the comments from last past. dragonoflife has been working on an extensive page for AGC on www.TvTropes.org, a wiki-like site with a lot of interesting examples of common stereotypes/archetypes/trends/cliches from all forms of fiction (not just TV). I got stuck following the links to Batman Gambit, seventeen thousand variations of the Xanatos Gambit, and ended up on Crapsack World. It's easy to lose yourself following the many links and seeing how they are defined and examples of comics, series, movies and books where they show up. Very cool.

ACG #444

Here's AGC #444, where Jill's feeling a little 'unloved'.

Winter finally got around to becoming cold, and snowing and such. Shoveled my driveway for the first time... which is odd for a number of reasons, including:

I don't have a car

I don't own 75% of my driveway

Technically, the vaguely triangular lot on one side of my house is owned by the city, and includes around 2/3 to 3/4 of the width of my gravel driveway, but we have a longstanding easement (the property is really useless to the city; a wild wooded inconveniently-sized lot with a telephone pole). If they did decide to randomly repeal the easement (and note that I'm pretty sure they can't legally build anything that close to the house based on building codes), I could always turn my front yard into a parking spot. If I had a car.

Anyhow, walking in the cold sucked, especially since we got up super-early to arrive at the medical testing place before they opened (website says 7:30am). So we get there are 7:20 and it's already open and we're 15th in line. I'm not on crack here - the guy who sat next to me arrived at 7:30, and he was like "Um, what time did they open?" Apparently he believed the website too.

Then afterwards, I saw ads in the hall from the X-ray/ultrasound place including (amongst other things) "Heartbeat bears". Now from the name (and a little thinking), I assume this is a stuffed animal which would loop the recorded heartbeat of the mother to relax newborns. Seems like a solid idea - at least from a commercial perspective. Has some intrinsic logic. May even work. Makes me wonder though, has anybody tested the longterm effects of a couple extra years of mom's heartbeat? Separation anxiety? Shyness? Headbanging? Who knows in what ways this could cause kids to become maladjusted. Oh well...

AGC #443

Finally, here's AGC #443 (a bit slow this time around, but at least it's there now).

After that first one, some of the Hungry Man frozen dinners have had slightly less ridiculous numbers on their nutritional information (like a mere 85% of the daily recommended sodium intake), but they still all seem to have more bad stuff in them than two ordinary frozen dinners (which would add up to about the same 1 lb of food). The Salisbury steak was the most comparable to it's Michelina's equivalent, but the "apple dessert" was really just goo. It was a case where just buying two Michelina's would win out, despite the fact they don't include any dessert.

AGC #442

Here it comes...AGC #442.

Okay, I take a frozen dinner to work every day. Normally I buy very very cheap ones (whatever's on sale), but for a while there were none on for cheap, just Hungry Man dinners on sale. Sale for them is like $2 to $2.50 cdn, and you do get a lot more food for the money, which is probably good because I'm told I don't eat enough. In fact, on family feud today, the top answer for "What is a good weight for a 6-foot tall man?" was "200 lbs", and since I'm four inches taller and at least 30 lbs lighter than that... ya, I should probably eat more. So okay, I got a few of the Hungry Man ones.

Well, I ate one Sunday, and it was pretty good. It was a lot more like a real meal than my usual Michelina's ones (though they go on sale for around $1.49 cdn, and since then I've bought a ton of those for $0.99, which is very good savings.

Thing is, I looked at the nutritional information for the Hungry Man dinner. HOLY CRAP. I mean, 33g of protein, 40% of daily recommended iron, 9g of fibre... those are good. 980 calories? Again, I'm a little underweight, and I never eat enough at work, so calories are fine. Even the 46 grams of fat is not as bad for me, because I end up eating vegetarian most of the time and don't get much animal fat (though the 10g Sat-fat and 2g Trans-fat are BAD)... but it goes on from there. 110 mg of cholesterol??? 25g of sugars? But it has 105% of the daily recommended sodium intake! 2520 mg. I'm really not the type to mind the nutritional information so much, but I know I get more than enough salt already. The kicker is, you turn the box over and on the front there is this little seal that says "INSPECTED for wholesomeness by U.S. Department of Agriculture". Apparently they didn't inspect the label on the back...

Important general information

My dad came down and finally got a chance to see my house. He seemed pretty positive about it (and optimistic about my ability to perform the minor improvements it needs, while urging me not to worry too much about getting them all done ASAP). It was nice to have him over, and hear more about his trip.

At the moment, we're all pissed at the US government. Apparently, the IRS now requires companies (like PODs) to withhold taxes on all internet income from foreigners over $100, and we're talking THIRTY PERCENT! This is despite the fact that we are permanent residents of Canada with no residency or place of business IN the US, and that of course we are paying taxes on that income in Canada. We have to submit a tax form to each company that we are earning <$100 with just to declare that crap I just said, after which they will STILL withhold 10% on the first $5000, and the full %30 on anything above that, and apparently we'd have to file a freakin' US tax return to have any chance of getting refunded all this lovely double-taxation. As you can imagine, it's pretty obnoxious.

And if you're thinking "I'm a 'foreign person' who make more than $100 US online from American companies, and I haven't heard of this"... well, from what I'm reading, you'll probably hear about it soon enough, when you cheques stop coming and you get requests for the w-8ben form. It's oodles of fun.

In other news, Champions MMO is having another free weekend for American Thanksgiving, from Thursday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m. PST, through Monday, November 30 at 10:00 a.m. PST. You can sign up here, assuming the link from my email works.

And I actually spend money on a game (a rare occurrence). I dropped $40 on Street Fighter IV for the PC - of course, the only way to get it that 'cheap' (only $10 more than for the consoles) was through instant download sites, like direct2drive.com or www.capcom.com, but either way, now I can enjoy the thrill of turning all the graphic settings to minimum for my aging computer (and fixed frame rate so it just skips frames instead of lagging to crap), and I can enjoy my demented "fighting games played on the keyboard" passion which has been so long neglected. SF4 has pretty good support for that, actually, from using extra keys specifically for the 'hit all three punches/kicks at once' commands, to the new shortcut for the dragon-punch motion (this works on the joystick too), which is tapping diagonal-down twice and hitting the button. Of course, I don't use that one because I've been doing real DP motions with the arrow keys for years :) Anyway, I haven't got to online play yet, but SF4 lets you play VS the comp while waiting for a challenge, and if an online game comes up, it supposedly auto-pauses your game, and lets you resume where you were when you finish pasting some real person. The only thing is, they say Windows Live games don't let you play against console players (not even Xbox), so I don't know how big the player pool on the PC is going to be...

AGC #438... huh?

This is the one I skipped, AGC #438 (even though the current one is #440). I kindof like having the little bit of connecting description and such in the archives, but I felt it would be even more disappointing than my usual updates to people who had to wait days for it. So I snuck it in there, and anyone reading through the archives would probably not notice the brief lack of funny, because they just move on to the next one (hopefully enjoying the story).

So now I just need to get out the next REAL update in a reasonable amount of time (and there's so much stuff I should be doing around the house... it never ends)...

So what's up?

Well, home improvements are real interesting when you have no skills. I had a hell of a time installing a new mailbox, when all there is to anchor it to is siding (with what appears to be styrofoam insulation underneath). Screwing blinds into the back door (if you saw it before and after it would make sense to you) was tricky since you have to get through the metal plate, then there's just insulation inside, again a crappy thing for a screw to hang onto. I did manage to replace the old doorknobs, thank-goodness for adjustible knob thingies, since our front door used the nonstandard 70mm offset.

I would like to put out a special "F-you" to some of the seventeen-trillion companies who want me to pay them monthly, yet won't set up pre-authorized credit-card billing. I have no intention of giving them all PAD authorization on my bank account (and having payments trickle out on like eight different days of the month), whereas my creditcard balance IS automatically paid in full from my bank every month, which ought to let me pay all the bills automatically with only a single day to watch for each month while accumulating cash back. Now, I can understand in principle why the mortgage company won't allow credit payments. There's really something unseemly about it (mainly because most people DON'T pay their creditcard in full automatically each month) when it's repaying another debt like that, and if somebody was actually paying another form of interest on their mortgage payments it would put a lot of people in the hole faster than smoking. But why the hell can't I pay my hydro, gas bill and waterheater rental on my credit card? What possible disadvantage is it to them? If anything, I'd think people would be LESS likely to have a payment rejected due to exceeding their credit limit than the number of people who would bounce PAD payments because (if authorized all the companies that want it) there would be one coming out every day for the second half of the month?

Also, Damn you game reviews for making me want things. Apparently Street Fighter IV: The Journey Home (okay, that's not the subtitle, but certainly could have been for this return to the franchises classic 2D roots) is available on the PC, complete with online play. You can literally play single player vs the computer until an online challenge comes in, the game will auto-pause when you accept the challenge, and win or lose, it will return paused so you can resume pounding the computer from exactly where you left off. And while they recommend various joysticks until they're blue in the face, the game supports my demented favorite, keyboard play! The very reason I always remove my capslock key from every new keyboard (I hate getting hit or killed because my WASD "home row" slipped over to the sub-optimal Q-[CAPS]-AS configuration).

So why does Street Fighter IV for the PC cost $49.99 CAD, while the PS3 and Xbox versions are only $29.99??? (on amazon.ca) At the lower price, I would likely just buy it, whereas at $50 it becomes an irritating minor budget issue.

AGC #439

I love that my girlfriend asked me for advice with something she's working on, and I answered:

DEMONAC: "Poop."
GF: "What did you say?"
DEMONAC: "Poop."
GF: "Oh, poop."

...and that was actually a meaningful contribution.

And in that spirit, here's AGC #439! What happened to #438? Well, 438 wasn't actually funny. So in a rare weird-internet-comic-style decision, I pushed ahead and made 439 first. When I get a chance, I'll "backfill" the previous story-connecting-but-not-very-funny comic, and people reading the archives in the future won't know (or mind).

You aren't missing anything by reading this one now though. A more sane writer would have just edited out the in-between stuff as unnecessary.

A few notes from the moment...

I should make more twittery point-form posts every once in a while because otherwise these little observations are lost (or shared only with my girlfriend).

I've been in the new house over two weeks, and we're fairly settled

Despite how busy we've been, I don't feel like we've made much progress

Based on the above, I'm starting to feel like a dick for not having had my friends over yet.

The post office claims they're going to give me my refund if I go there today.

Getting out the receipt I need, I knocked over the dinosaur guarding my important paper.

Starting to question the security value of said dinosaur

A few days ago we were walking behind a man in an electric wheelchair who was feeding birds

The flock that followed him grew each time he paused to "bird-bomb" an area with breadcrumbs

We had fun imagining him taking revenge on, say, the public library with his avian army

We joked that he was probably the most interesting thing that would happen that day

Tried to close an old bank account and found somebody's OAS was mistakenly deposited there for two months

*Sigh*

Champions Post-Mortem

Well, the Champions MMO free weekend is over. Really, I the timing was pretty poor for me, I had to work prettymuch all weekend, and that meant I couldn't coordinate with quill18 to try team action or anything (problem totally on my end).

It definitely seems like a much better City of Heroes; you get your travel power right away (after the tutorial anyway), and they have a lot of great costume and power options you can customize, like you can choose whether you fly with rocket boots, hover on a disk, glide around like Iceman or the Human Torch, or just go superman style. Plus they have tunneling and swinging (with the classic "web straight up to nowhere" and all). While they have great costume options like various animated tails and wings, and asymmetrical arm/leg elements, it looks like a lot of other costume elements have to be unlocked. And I found it irritating that if you start with weapon powers (swords and/or guns), usually you can choose the style of your weapons - but you can't actually SEE what you are choosing in the character building screen, because they only come out when you use those powers.

The quests are nothing like CoH's bear bones all-the-same stuff. I mean, it's an MMO, most quests will be very similar. But in Champions you go around the world and do things that make sense like in other MMOs, not just "kill 50 of these guys" followed by "go into another wearhouse and clear it up/click on something". And most quests are give you a big circle demarcating their area on the minimap, so you're rarely left wondering "northwest of what?"

Obviously I didn't get very far, but the leveling seemed good. You have a lot of flexibility to take whatever powers you want - you can go 'broad' in the tree if you are willing to go a little less 'deep', and even then they try not to penalize you *too* much for splashing. So prereqs are usually like "3 Fire powers OR 5 non-energy-generating powers from other trees" (your first power is always an attack that generates energy, which itself gives sort of an interesting gameplay element). At some levels you get new powers, at others you get your choice of stat increases (you can take +8 to one stat, +5 each to two, +3 each to four stats or a blanket +2 to all ten stats, but each increase is 'named' and can only be taken once. So you can't just take +8 strength every time, for example), and at other levels you gain the ability to 'enhance' one of your powers, either a general upgrade, or a power-specific modifier like adding a buff proc or a debuff, or something that changes how the power works a little. It has a lot of potential, assuming it is balanced.

Overall, I give it a provisional 'thumbs-up', but I can't see myself paying for it, and in order to properly gauge it against other MMOs ("Is it as fun as WoW") you'd really need opinions from some people who've played both at the max level for some time.

In other news, a big thumbs-down to everything else everywhere. After we paid $40 for mail redirection, two weeks later not one piece has been redirected, right up to my pay stub which I found at the old address yesterday. I call them up, and they are like "oops, we didn't give the notice to the actual letter-carrier". And their supervisor is mysteriously not in to answer the phone (or to answer for the screw-up, and the 4 packages they lost in the 2-3 months BEFORE we moved).

And it's taking forever to get an estimate on installing eavestroughs. And my new chqs came really fast, but my name was mispelled. And we're still trying to clean up after various calls that we missed during the FIVE DAYS that our phone was cut off by a Bell screw-up that we are somehow paying $55 for. I'm getting so tired of calling places and disputing things.

Champions Online Free Play till November 2nd

Well, if you haven't heard, Cryptic's new MMO (makers of City of Heroes) is having a free play weekend.

Now, I haven't played it for more than an hour and a half or so, so please take these assessments for the unfair assumptions they are, but:

(A) It has the potential to be much better than City of Heroes.
With the same great character appearance options right from the start (plus a lot of improvement, like pretty much all the arm/shoulder/leg options can be applied to both, the left or the right side), better power selection options (there's a "custom" option which lets you pick and choose stuff from different power sets), plus genuine RPG-style loot/gear upgrades and slightly more interactible environments (you can pick up, club with and hurl most crud you see in the streets, if you're strong enough, and it looks like throwing a large object is a great "pulling" option)...
...all this means it's much more like what everyone wanted City of Heroes to be in the first place.
(B) It's still a whole hell of a lot like City of Heroes. If you enjoyed CoH, you'll probably enjoy this. If CoH bored you, well... I have no idea what they've done for advancement and late game, since I've only done the tutorial. The devs have had one whole MMO to learn from their mistakes, so they may have figured out how to reward, entertain and retain players better. Or maybe not. Who knows...
(C) It's only a weekend, but it's free. So if you love making characters, playing with the appearance options and checking out what a bunch of different powers feel like as much as I do, you may just get about 70% of the enjoyment you'd get from buying the game, then you can just delete it afterwards and save your money.

But you do have to love a game that refers to "respec" options as Retcons, and plans in a future update to let you repeat quests as "flashbacks".

I have an insane number of phonecalls I need to make that I couldn't for the last 5 days (already went over on my cellphone minutes just getting my phone installed so I could get internet back).

Plus we need to get curtains for the front and back doors (privacy plz!) and put up the chain on our front door, make some minor improvements to the support structure of our basement, of course we need to buy a power drill for that (and probably a circular saw). All this we are working on, but lack of internet hampered our efforts greatly, and now that we got it back... my week of vacation from work is up, and I'm going back tomorrow.

And we still have to figure out when to have people over and stuff.

WE EXIST AGAIN!

After 5 days, Bell finally unf***ed our phone line, one quick call to our ISP and boom, we can now communicate with the world again.

To anyone who tried to call me/us since, oh, the evening of the 21st, no, our phone number has NOT changed, it was just in an alternate universe for a week in there.

Will try to update more later, but for now I have to make calls before the end of the business day and change my address on 30,000 websites.

sorry, I've been incommunicado since we moved because Bell screwed us royally.

Disconnected our phone in the morning before we got up - that part was fine.
But they were supposed to simultaneously connect the phone at the house...
Well they supposedly couldn't do it remotely and needed to send a tech. Which they did INSTANTLY. While we were nowhere near the house and wouldn't be for like 10 hours.
Tech leaves a note that they missed us, call 310-bell to reschedule, which we did when we got there, and they said they couldn't send anyone until the 27th. So when they said no tech was required, they could send one instantly without any notification, but after that, we get screwed for 5 days...

And our internet was DSL, so they can't hook it up until bell catches up. I called a bunch of different phone companies on my cell, and asked DSL if they could drop a "dry line", but apparently it's impossible for anyone to do it with less than 5-10 days warning. So we are over on our cell minutes and out of touch until at least the 27th, and there's nothing we can do (this is the library computer)

The move itself went great, with my manager Dana and her husband helping out. We offered $200 for the move, which is half what it would cost with movers, and everybody is very happy with that. Went pretty smooth, we've already gone back, cleaned up our apt and returned the keys, so we are officially moved.

Or will be when we get internet back.

I have keys!

There was a lot more in the way of stress and obstacles in the last few days than there should have been, but we finally have to keys to our new house. Of course, they came so late in the day that after waiting for 6 hours to get up and go there, we're going to end up eating first.

So tofu first, walking around taking pictures after!

[edit]
Wow, they left us a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't part of the agreement, including a nice dining room set, a porch swing, two old vacuum cleaners and a barbecue. It's like we won on the Price Is Right.

I have to say, the previous owners were very nice, and we really appreciate how they have helped us out (I'm sure they were more inclined to be nice because we made it a quick and easy sale for them, and didn't try to drive a hard bargain).

Here's a way to use sound science and logic, +evil marketing = everyone wins

It's called FullBar, and it's the critical component of the "aquafull" system. Critical, in that without it, people could use the science and change in behavior to succeed at their weight-loss goals, but the company wouldn't make any money from it.

Here's the system.
1) Eat a fullbar.
2) Drink a glass of water.
3) Wait 30 minutes.
4) Eat a normal dinner.

The television ad compares the science to the way stomach surgery works; both methods reduce the amount of food required to trigger that satisfied feeling that you get when you are full. And, as far as truth in advertising, they don't say anything that is false, or even dubious (that I can see). Due to the magic of fullbar, your body will give you that satisfied "full" feeling after consuming much smaller portions of your favorite foods. You eat what you want, but can still manage your calorie intake without even thinking about it.

What does the fullbar actually do? I'm assuming... nothing.

Anyone with a passing familiarity with reality, should easily determine that (A) the system probably does work, and (B) if it does work, it definitely works without the fullbar part (the part that costs money). I guarantee that glass of water does more to fill you up than some expensive little bar, and actually, drinking one glass a half hour before each meal seems like a damned effective strategy if you find diets are leaving you craving more food. If for some reason, solid food is required in addition to the water to achieve the optimal effect, I'm sure there's a simple inexpensive substitute, which doesn't have to pay for all the expensive packaging and major cable TV ad campaign.

But if they weren't selling you something, it would be more of a public service ad. The marketing is clever, and doesn't lie (to my knowledge), but is still deceptive. Of course, the worst part is the line that suggests you can also eat a fullbar at other times when you're hungry. They wouldn't be crying if you went through more than one box of their product per week - though the extra snacking would probably be counterproductive to the dieting part.

http://www.fullbar.com/

AGC #432, as we get closer to moving day, I think I've got enough stuff ready to avoid missing/delaying comics, but we'll have to see.

I did get to get see my sister (home from overseas for a short while), and I should probably talk about that because it was nice, and she had interesting stories. But my weekend schedule got mixed around at work and I need to sleep now. Preferably faster-than-average sleep.

AGC #431

Happy Thanksgiving, and enjoy AGC #431, which has nothing to do with the holiday. At all. Zero.

Now I must hasten to bed so I can catch an early morning bus to dad's place to see my (recently and temporarily back from Korea) sister for a couple days. I'm pretty sure I'll still be making moving-related phonecalls even from the bus. Moving day is like... next week...
